Verveine Creates Hotdrama

After a long series of singles, EPs and live videos, the multi-instrumentalist and electronica experimenter from Vevey, Verveine aka Joell Nicolas, has at last got round to compiling a proper album. “Hotdrama” was released on 28 August by VRVN Records, Fav Art Publishing and is distributed by Believe Digital and Irascible.

Influenced by artists as diverse as Kraftwerk, Björk, the Knife or even Aphex Twin, Verveine’s early recordings could loosely be described as “Folktronica noir”. Exiled for several years in Berlin and Brussels and involved in a variety of art and music projects, she returned to Switzerland to win the electronica part of the Demo Tape Clinic at M4Music in Zurich in 2017. Unrushed in its creation, “Hotdrama” presents an artist with a clear vision and a satisfyingly idiosyncratic sound. Raised in classical music as a piano player, she now mixes the still quite “noir” and intriguingly abstract side of her electronica with organic piano and strings. This album was well worth waiting for.
