Debrah Scarlett international debut release
Following on from an atmospheric taster single, “Cynical Youth”, which came out in February, Debrah Scarlett releases her new EP “DYS(U)TOPIA” on 17 March.
With an Italian-Swiss father and a Norwegian mother, Debrah Scarlett grew up “commuting” between these countries and cultures. This experience of living between two worlds, as it were, is at the core of much of her song writing. “I think a lot of people get very confused when they ask where and when I’ve lived here and there.” she says. “I’ve kind of been like a yo-yo, moving back and forth. Music became my language, it enabled me to truly express myself.” Having taken part in the Norwegian version of the casting show “The Voice”, Debrah Scarlett represented Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2015. Her song, a duet with Morland, was entitled “A Monster Like Me” and earned her a platinum disc in Norway.
“Complete with strings and soaring melodies,” writes the music blog The Line of Best Fit, “Cynical Youth” is uplifting transcendental pop with hints of Daughter, Birdy and Florence Welch. There’s a magic in the track’s lyricism that tells a story in similar way to the narratives of fellow Norwegian songstress Aurora.”
“DYS(U)TOPIA” is released via Radicals/Believe/Soulfood. Debrah will appear live at Zermatt Unplugged, 4 – 6 April. She will also perform at a showcase on 16 May in Berlin.
