Soukey Delivers a Box of Gems
Fresh out on Forcefield Records is “Bijoux”, the multi-faceted debut album from fast rising Bernese rapper Soukey.
Still only in her early twenties, Soukey grew up in Fribourg, a small town on the edge between the French and the German parts of Switzerland. Fribourg is well known for its rich and innovative music scene. Soukey first came to prominence in 2022 by winning the “demo of the year” as well as the “lyrics & beats” awards at m4music. Hers is a warm and melodic blend of melody and trap beats, garnished by her smooth and warm delivery and lyrics that don’t shy away from difficult topics often to do with the joys as well as difficulties of love. Interestingly, she raps exclusively in her native Bernese dialect: “I simply love my dialect”, she says. “And it’s a completely different feeling when you really understand every word in a song.” Actually, the Bernese dialect with its melodious flow is probably the most musical Swiss dialect. Therefore, whilst Soukeys lyrics are always interesting, it is easy to enjoy her vocals, like any other instrument, purely as sound.
Forcefield Records describe themselves as a “young, queer-feminist independent label”. At present, the label is collaborating with around twenty artists, looking after management, booking, and record releases.
