Melicious Reflecting on Loss and Hope

If the title of Melicious’s new EP – “Ugly Starts and Promises”, out now via Irascible – suggests music drenched in minor chords and anguished cries, quite the opposite is the truth. The songs may touch on difficult themes and ideas – but they are delivered on the back of some gorgeously crafted pop tunes and a glossily produced high-octane punk-pop drive.

On her electro-poppy debut EP “Risky Business” (2022) Melicious – aka Melissa Varela – pondered the pains of heartbreak. This time round her themes are family, loss, selflove and hope. The highlight of a classy EP is a track entitled “Awful Start”. It was co-written with Eurovision 2024 winner Nemo and boasts a fantastic chorus reminiscent of Emily Haines’s great band, Metric.
