Malummi Painting the Universe Black
The second album from the Basel-based guitar/drums/vocals trio Malummi, “The Universe is Black”, is available now via Irascible.
Arriving two years after their remarkable debut, “Blood”, the band clearly have not rested on their laurels. The dense and yet featherlight trip-hop of yesterday has made way for a much more intense, often guitar-led art rock that occasionally veers into P.J. Harvey territory without, however, losing the beguilingly warm vocal style of their Brasil-born song writer Larissa Rapold. The stylistic as well as thematic variety of these ten songs is remarkable. Ranging from the anguished wall of sound of “Mother”, via the beautifully melodic message of “You’re Not Going to Ruin My Day” and the angular “There is no Thing” to the ambient shimmer of “Diver”, “The Universe is Black” dazzles with its sense of adventure and the confidence to follow daring ideas through.
