Perseverance Pays off for Peter Kernel
They’re the self-proclaimed “best band in the world called Peter Kernel”, and they’ve been going for fifteen years. Quite rightly, the brains behind this much-loved maverick operation, Barbara Lenhoff and Aris Bassetti, have decided that this is an event worth celebrating. They will do so with an album appropriately entitled “Perseverance: 15 Years of Peter Kernel”. Not just a simple “Best of…” collection, Aris and Barbara have trawled the depths of their archives to come up with a selection of demos, B-sides, sketches and even some unfinished songs that never found a place on any of their four albums but nevertheless helped to shape the path of their career.
Always a highly original band, it is well nigh impossible to do Peter Kernel’s music justice with mere words. Guitar-driven and percussive, it can also be minimalist and repetitive, with unpredictable tempo changes and weird sound-effects designed to throw pedants and purists off the scent. Plus, there is Barbara’s unique singing style and loads of great melodies, all of which have led to 700+ live performances in Europe and North America, three soundtracks on top of the above-mentioned four studio albums, and a long list of typically witty videos and short films.
“Perseverence” is released on 18 December 2020 by On the Camper Records in collaboration with Hummus Records.
