Ikarus Uncovering “Plasma”

“Plasma” is the title of the fourth and latest album from the self-styled groove-jazz quintet Ikarus. Released on 25 February 2022 via Ronin Rhythm Records. The band was formed by composer Ramon Oliveras to explore the dynamic possibilities of an interaction between wordless vocals and an instrumental line-up consisting of percussion, piano, and upright bass.

Up to now, Ikarus mostly stuck to Olivera’swritten compositions. This time round, the gestation process was more communal, with the individual pieces evolving in the studio with the band riffing and improvising on sketches and fragments brought in by Oliveras. In comparison with Ikarus’s impressionistic previous records, their music has now acquired a near physical immediacy that effortlessly converts the often fiendishly complex rhythmic patterns into music that flows easily like a river.

After a number of performances in Switzerland and Germany in spring, Ikarus will play at various jazz festivals in Germany and Iceland during the summer. The band enjoys priority status in the national Swiss arts organisation Pro Helvetia’s jazz support programme.
