Ocevne Feeling the Energy

Out now via Warner Music France is “Nishati”, the debut album from swiftly rising Genevan R&B star Ocevne (pronounced Océane). “(My style) is R&B, but inspired by many other genres”, the singer recently explained to Elle Suisse magazine. “I’m a very curious person who doesn’t like to get bogged down in any particular genre. The proof is that “Nishati” brings together my favourite genres, but also invites you to rediscover me in rap, variété, and even Jersey club music.”

Ocevne’s musical career began a decade ago when she hit on the idea of recording short snippets of songs and upload them on Instagram. Things really started to move in 2018 when she covered a song by the French afropop/R&B star Dadju who promptly invited her to support him on his next tour. Veteran producer Barack Adama, too, sturck by the extraordinary talent of Ocevne and recorded her first EPs with her. Three EPs and 100’000 Instagram subscribers later, the singer, now 27, felt ready for an album proper. “My first two EPs were very much in search of my musical identity”, she explains, “as I was just starting out in the music business. The third came at a time when I finally felt I’d found myself. But “Nishati” is the album of authenticity which goes hand in hand with an even greater maturity than before.” The recording of “Nishati” – Swahili for “energy” – was overseen by the rapper Tuerie and will most definitely please fans of classic 1980s and 1990s R&B with its shades of TLC and Destiny’s Child. However, there are clear signs that hers is also the sound of today: her June gig in Paris was sold out in a few days, necessitating the hasty addition of an extra date.
