Dino Brandão Includes Himself

At long last, Dino Brandão’s debut solo album! Entitled “Self Inclusion”, it was released via Two Gentlemen on 19 April (digital) and 3 May (vinyl, cd). When multi-instrumentalist, producer and singer/songwriter Brandão followed up the successful album “Ich liebe dich” recorded with Sophie Hunger and Faber with an EP that was supposed to be an appetiser for his debut solo album, no one, least of all himself, could have predicted that it would be three more years before said album would actually see the light. Shortly after, however, Dino’s life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

If anything, these setbacks strengthened his resolve to remain true to his muse. “Self Inclusion” opens with a track entitled “Sweet Madness” which neatly, affectingly and without the slightest trace of self-pity sets the tone for what’s to follow. With family roots in both Switzerland and Angola, Brandão draws heavily on an Angolan folk music style called semba. The lightness of touch which he applies to the instrumental arrangements and the laid-back rhythms – apart from a little help from percussionist Domi Chansorn, Brandão plays everything himself – creates a deeply resonant contrast with the weight of his lyrics and the gravity-defying ability of his vocals.
