Jeans for Jesus with new cut!
Three years ago, their last album hit the top 20. There is every hope that with “19xx_2xxx” (aka “nineteen hundred, two thousand”) Jeans for Jesus will go one (or two) better. “19xx_2xxx” was released internationally by Universal on 24 January. For Stephan Eicher, who supports Jeans for Jesus on the French version of the single „1900 quelquechose“, the band is currently the most exciting band singing in Swiss German.
Formed seven years ago after a chance encounter in New York, the declared aim of Jeans for Jesus has always been to sing in their own language, Bernese German, songs that would have an appeal far beyond the borders of Berne, or even Switzerland. From the first – the dangerously catchy “Estavayeah”, all about a camping site near Lake Neuchatel – they combined lyrics that were partly smart, partly droll, with laid-back vocals and an electronica-infused, up-beat sort-of-dream-pop style that sounded as if it had been reared in Brooklyn rather than Berne. Thanks to a handful of unforgettable melodies and catch-phrases, their first two albums easily fulfilled the original brief, to write songs that “cool kids would dance to and the others would sing along to”.
Now comes their third album – more of the same but different! Recorded in various cities, including Berne, Zurich and Paris, “19xx_2xxx” is a seriously smart pop record. The lyrics may still be unintelligible to anyone living outside a hundred mile circle of Berne. What does it matter when the music speaks all languages?
