L’Eclair Creating Confusions

12 November 2021 sees the release via Bongo Joe Records of a new album from Genevan sextet L’Eclair. Called “Confusions”, it is the band’s fourth, and yet another example to show that the slowed down pace of lockdown was not all bad for the soul. Forced to suspend their incessant rounds of touring the world – including a support slot for the Cinematic Orchestra at London’s massive O2 Arena – and spend more time in their kitchens, they were able to take a much more considerate approach to the production of this, their fourth album. The results – “Confusions” – are anything but confused or confusing. Recorded in four sessions spread out over nine months, the group, according to their press release, were able to spend “more time, energy, and consideration on the production. This new approach gave them the ability to reflect and revise, allowing them to focus more on composition, arrangements and structures.”

Formed around the nucleus of keyboarder Sebastien Bui and guitarist Stefan Lilov in 2015, L’Eclair produce a purely instrumental sound that is pretty groovy and yet charmingly ironic. Influenced as much by 60s blaxploitation cool and Bert Kaempfert as by Sun Ra and Liquid Liquid, they have introduced more electronic elements to their sound of late as well as the odd hint of psychedelic dreaminess.
