A Muddy Monk and an Ultra Tape

A Muddy Monk and an Ultra Tape

12 June saw the release on Half Awake Records of “Ultra Tape”, the new mini album from electro-chansonnier Muddy Monk.

Fribourg on the border between the French and the German part of Switzerland, with its charmingly old-fashioned vibe and a small but inspirational museum of the kinetic works of Jean Tinguely, has always been a fertile ground for musical innovation. Guillaume Dietrich a.k.a Muddy Monk was born there 28 years ago to a pair of amateur singers who dragged him along to the local choir at a young age before also foisting piano lessons on him. Remarkably, young Guillaume did not rebel but, on the contrary, revelled in the experience. Fast forward twenty years, and Guillaume, after working as a producer for several years, has brought his love of electronic sounds to bear on his very own hybrid version of melancholy electronic chanson.

Whilst his debut album “Longue Ride” still betrayed traces of a past love of hip-hop, “Ultra Tape” presents an entirely fresh face of Muddy Monk. Having discovered the joys of a out-and-out retro gadget, the Akai MG1214, he now manages to sound nostalgic at the same time as strangely futuristic
