Eurosonic to feature four top Swiss acts
Stevans (Muziekschool, Thurs. 14 Jan. at 9.25 pm)
Catchy melodies, lyrics by turn humorous and serious, powerful rhythms and smoking guitar riffs: what more can you ask for? While opening for prestigious artists such as Editors, The Les Rita Mitsouko, Snow Patrol and The Young Gods, Stevans are in quest of their own identity. Their album has enabled them to project their strength beyond the Swiss border, and in its wake they have completed tours of England and Portugal, with a French tour in the offing. They have also been performing at renowned Swiss festivals such as the Paléo in Nyon, Lucerne’s Blue Balls and the Montreux Jazz Festival, and in 2007 parleyed their first prize at Montreux into the chance to open for Deep Purple the following year.
Lee Everton (Grand Theatre Up, Thurs. 14 Jan. at 10.15 pm)
Singer-songwriter Everton is treating the world to his reggae stylings once again, after a two-year hiatus in which he fine-tuned what might be called his “slingstyle”. In solo acoustic sets with guitar as well as appearances on keyboard with the Scrucialists, he lives up to his creed: to make “positive, constructive” music, despite the sweet and lowdown feel of his lyrics.
Sophie Hunger (Het Paleis College, Fri. 15 Jan. at 8.25 pm)
Sophie Hunger has not been idle since presenting her highly acclaimed debut Monday’s Ghost (Nr 1 Swiss charts) in 2008: her next album will be released in March of 2010. Sophie has developed at lighting speed, enjoying the overwhelming response to her 2009 European tour and inspiring praise from colleagues like Jamie Cullum, Camille, Madeleine Peyroux and Stephan Eicher.
Pegasus (Huize Maas Front, Fri. 15 Jan. at 9.30 pm)
Following a lengthy tour of Switzerland in the wake of their debut CD, released two years ago, in which they warmed up for such greats as Joe Cocker, the quartet have been taking a creative break to work on new songs. The result: a heady mix of 60s pop and 70s rock that keeps both feet on the ground while offering listeners something to think about.
