Me + Marie’s album debut

Me + Marie are a kind of mini-super group, consisting of Maria Moling aka Maria de Val of the string-driven Southern Tyrolian Ladin-chanson outfit Ganes, Roland Scandella aka Roland Vögtli from the Grisons-based rock band Nau, and guitarist Tom Wörndl from the Bavarian world music band Levantino. Moling and Vögtli ran into each other when the latter was producing a radio program with the singing drummer for the Romansh-speaking channel of national Swiss radio SRF. They got on like a house on fire, bonding over their love of their respective local cultures and languages, Ladin and Romansh.

Me + Marie sound very different from either Ganes, Nau, or even Vögtlis Rumansh solo project Cha da Fö. Mostly singing in English for starters, Me + Marie take their inspiration from a more international strand of blues and folk tradition. Recording the music for their debut album “One Eyed Love” in wintery Berlin, they realised that something was missing. “Our music is focused on our voices,” explains Vögtli. “Of course, it’s easy to sing into a 10’000 Euro microphone and think: it’ll be OK. But it wasn’t enough for us. We needed a different kind of freshness to carry the emotions of our songs.” Come the summer, the trio hid away in the woods of Bavaria to re-record all their vocals in a very different atmosphere.

The result is a calm and confident debut album reminiscent here and there of the Civil Wars, but also – when things get louder, as they do – of the Kills.

Me + Marie’s debut album “One Eyed Love” is released by the Munich-based company Blankomusik.
