Swiss bands at Eurosonic 2008
Noorderslag started out as a single festival night in De Oosterpoort with the best and most promising Dutch acts. Nine years ago EuroSonic was added as was the presentation of the important Dutch pop and rock music award De Popprijs.
During these three days in January, Groningen is the epicentre of the European music scene when 180 bands and 1800 professionals get together for the prime European showcase and network event. With two festivals and a seminar for music industry professionals, the Noorderslag Weekend is the main network and information point for the Dutch music industry and the European live music industry, and moreover the most important platform to see European and Dutch talent on stage. Noorderslag Weekend is a unique opportunity to get Dutch and European bands under the attention of a wide range of national and international parties in the music industry and the Dutch audience. With just one ticket you can experience the best new bands from all over Europe.
During 2007, at least 366 concert broadcasts of EuroSonic/Noorderslag concerts were aired by European Broadcasting Union radio stations to audiences throughout Europe. Among the 21 radio stations involved in these broadcasts were BBC Radio One, Le Mouv‘ in France, Studio Brussels WDR/Eins Live and the Danish, Swedish and Dutch national radio stations.
With live broadcasts confirmed for the Danish, Dutch and Belgian radio stations for the 2008 edition, expectations are that several new radio stations will be added to the list. With the EBU Eurosonic group firmly behind the festival, radio shows containing EuroSonic and Noorderslag concerts will reach out as far as Eastern and Southern Europe and beyond…an audience of millions.
Swiss bands featured on the 2008 programme :
• Coal
Thursday 10th January 08
Venue : Muziekschool
showtime : 00.15 – 01.00
Still only 25 years old, COAL has found a new maturity on his third album, ‚Masquerade‘. The Swiss troubadour shows a level of depth and confidence, which far outweighs his age, as he steps out of his comfort zone and skillfully blends a mix of musical styles that a veteran would be proud of. If, with his first album, «Working Man» he could still use the bonus of naïve charm and with its successor «Let’s Build Us A Rocket» draw on the bonus of youth; the third is a more serious affair and looks at the world through the eyes of someone who has taken the time to live, love, laugh and learn. You can soon tell that COAL has given his all to ensure that this CD will surpass«Let’s Build Us A Rocket» (which Radio DRS 3 chose as its 2005 album of the year).

• Sophie Hunger
Thursday 10th January 08
Venue : De Spieghel (Main Room)
Showtime : 22h15 – 23h00
Her musical career seems like a dream come true – a year ago a total she was a total unknown she has since shared a stage with Stephan Eicher and The Young Gods. Her fist album "Sketches and sea" is an immediate success that skillfully layers many different musical directions..songwriting, soulful atmospheres, piano ballads or eerie songs. Sophie Hunger is truly captivating and is a star waiting in the shadows.

Venue : STADSCHOUWBURG
Showtime : 20.00 – 20.45
Their third album ‚Better in Springtime‘ offers a raw and authentic trip-hop and soul sound fusion, and reflects a mastery of both electronic and acoustic instrumentation. Still backed by the soulful voice of Lyn M, and the forceful groove of Granite, drummer and composer Alain Frey has joined forces with Sebastian Van Roth, deck and sound master, in order to bring us powerful new works of character and originality. Widely backed by the press and media Aloan have won over a wide audience too with their live performances, supporting the likes of Joe Cocker in Paris.
