Nola Kin Causing „Mayhem“

Singer/songwriter Nola Kin won’t forget the last few weeks very soon. First, on 3 May, her second solo EP, “Mayhem”, was released by Orange Peel Records. A few days later, on 8 May, she carried off the prestigious Artist Award at the biggest Swiss music event, the Swiss Music Awards. This particular award is voted for exclusively by other artists and therefore counts as a very public sign of appreciation by peers.

Born and raised in the soft hills above Lake Zurich, Nola Kin aka Carla Fellinger formed her first band in primary school. After many more such ventures and a spell at Zurich’s Hochschule der Künste studying “pop vocals”, she acted as a backing singer for established artists like Dodo, Baschi, Tobias Carshey – and Nemo. After a lot of soul-searching and uncertainty, two years ago she gave herself a push to step out as an artist in her own right. A remarkably self-assured and well-received debut EP was the first result. It wasn’t enough to drive away the demons that made Nola doubt her abilities. “The first song I wrote (for the new EP) was “Mayhem””, she writes. “I was tired of letting anxiety and uncertainty hold me back, always telling myself I’d pursue certain goals but never following through because of fear.” Citing influences like Blake Mills, Bon Iver and Dijon, the combination of a rich and deep voice and oddly compelling arrangements that make the guitars sound like animals in the mist, makes her songs not just distinctive but also haunting and memorable.
