Annakin Weaving a “Cocoon”

Out now via Phonag Records is “Cocoon” the new album from Ex-Swandive singer Annakin, aka Ann Kathrin Lüthi. Like its predecessor, “The Light Before Love Disappears” (2021), it was produced by Ed Harcourt. Unlike any of her previous albums, it was recorded at La Frette Studio near Paris where she followed in the footsteps of Nick Cave, Timber Timbre and Arctic Monkeys. All instruments were played by Annakin and Harcourt.

„It’s a really cool place.” reports Annakin, still buoyant from the experience. “It’s an old, dilapidated box, but you live there and you can record in the parlour and it sounds great. Also, the range of instruments available there perfectly suited our concept. It includes a Bösendorfer piano, for instance, that sounds like it’s played through cotton wool which fits perfectly with the theme of “Cocoon”. Also, the Oberheim synth – it brings punch and pressure.“

Finely spun and beautifully executed, Annakin’s songs are hazy in mood and lyrical in expression, betraying her musical roots in trip-hop and Sisters of Mercy. As always, however, her lyrics tend to dig deep. The album begins with a strikingly beautiful track entitled “Marian”. „I wrote the song when the attack on Mariupol began,“ explains the artist. “Only later I realised that the theme of the whole album is summed up here. It’s about protection and about war and, above all, about catharsis. About an experience that you have to process in order to find your way through to creativity and create something new.“
