OY Embracing the World
At long last, they’re back! Seven years after their last album, the multi-facetted electronica/vocal duo OY release their fourth album via Mouthwatering Records. Entitled “World Wide We”, it is their “statement for global solidarity”: “It’s the uplifting soundtrack to our most challenging times ,” they write. “A call to focus on what we have in common as a global society and to keep the bigger picture in mind.”
Defining their eclectic blend of influences as “electronic global pop music with afrofuturistic narratives”, OY, during their ten years of existence, have always striven to combine their splendidly danceable blend of influences with a message that goes beyond the “fight for the right to party”. Starting off with sound and visuals strongly inspired by Frimpong’s Ghanaian family roots, the duo has in the last few years developed an even more global style that also takes in elements of West Coast jazz, hip-hop, easy-listening, house, gospel, choral singing, or R&B. Featherlight e-piano and other keyboard-settings and percussion dominate the overall sound, whilst Frimpong’s lyrics and vocal delivery convey the message. Interludes in the shape of snippets of speech from a number of different African voices reading Frimpong’s words drive another aspect of OY’s plea for co-operation: “Africa is not a poor continent These resources must be managed responsibly, accountably. They must be shared more equitably. Africa is rich and not poor!” (“Interlude: Africa is Rich”).
To celebrate the release, OY are touring Switzerland, Germany and France throughout March and April. They have also launched their own crowd-funding campaign to support future projects: https://www.fanklub.com/oy
