Evelinn in a Fever
“Longing Fever” is the intriguing title of Evelinn Trouble’s fifth album – her first in six years. It comes to us via Mouthwatering Records/Broken Silence and was released on 22 October 2021. A “pop album”, Evelinn calls it. Well, “Longing Fever” is certainly more easily accessible than some of this restlessly innovative artist’s previous work. It is, however, still very much a Trouble record, full of unexpected melodic turns and strong statements. “What I mean by “pop” is that I tried to be as clear, compact and to the point as I could.” she says.
Evelinn Trouble, the daughter of a jazz-singing mother and a music-loving non-musician father, was born and raised in Zurich, Switzerland. Taught by her mother, she began to play piano when she was a toddler. The first truly important musical event in her life arrived when an uncle passed on his underused electric guitar to her when she was eight. Shortly after, she wrote her first song, followed by her first band, the punky all-girl trio Lorry. The discovery of Radiohead’s „Kid A“ and the sharp extension of her musical horizons marked another milestone in her development. Causing a stir in the vibrant early 00s Zurich scene with her self-produced and -played debut album, released in summer 2007, she became a backing vocalist with Sophie Hunger. Since then she has formed several bands, each time with a different emphasis, including one band that plays Black Sabbath songs exclusively.
Having spent extended periods living in New York and London, “Longing Fever” was mostly written and produced in a dark and cold winter in Berlin. The songs reflect Trouble’s need during that involuntarily introvert time to define her own philosophy of relationships – including that with herself.
