Caroline Alves Shines in the “Moonlight”

2 October 2020 saw the release on Sophie Records of “Moonlight”, the gorgeous debut album from Caroline Alves. Alves, based on the border between German and French Switzerland in Biel, combines featherlight hip-hop beats with rhythms rooted in her native Brasil and a hint of French indie chanson, to come up with a beguiling new twist on a sound that could be loosely described as trip-hop.

Born in a favela in Rio, Alves came to Switzerland in 2008 after the only male role model in her life, her uncle, had died. 14 at the time, she turned to the guitar for solace. A fan of Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu and Massive Attack, she quickly found her own style, road-testing her songs by busking in the streets and playing in local bars. Her debut EP “Unbound” was released in 2016. It took another two years, however, for the quality of these songs to be recognized beyond the edges of her hometown, resulting in a massively increased number of radio plays and festival bookings.

“Moonlight” was produced by the duo Stereotyp (Klischée, Jeans for Jesus, Dialog Ethik, etc.).
