KT Gorique Digs Future Roots

“Future Roots” is what rapper KT Gorique calls her musical style – a fusion of everything she has picked up in her life so far, “good or bad”, and which will bring forth whatever the future holds. The first fruit of her new-found confidence is her debut album “Akwaba” (it means “welcome” in her native Ivorian dialect Baoulé). The album was released on 15 May via French label Baco Records.

Born in Cote d’Ivoire, KT Gorique was eleven years old when she arrived in Switzerland. Hip-Hop and reggae were part of her upbringing, and so were various styles of West African music. When it came to her own music, however, KT Gorique, even though she received praise and acclaim, felt that a certain “je ne sais quoi” was missing. Things changed when in June 2018 she returned to Abidjan at last for a visit of her extended family. Once there, everything became clear: What was missing was – according to her media biography – “the balance between everything that made her what she was, without excluding anything, good and bad”.

With “Akwaba”, KT Gorique truly has found her voice. The various elements that form her musical history are blended seamlessly together, combining not just reggae and hip-hop, but also kalimba, balafon and other traditional African instruments.
