Moes Anthill aren’t “Quitters”!

If the title of Moes Anthill’s new album, “Quitter”, gives the impression that this may be the quintet’s parting shot, the opposite is true. Moes Anthill are very much alive, and they intend to continue to be so. “Quitter” is their fourth album (their fifth, if we count last year’s chamber music project Moes Anthill String Quartet), the title a sly, reverse-ironic reference to the subject matter of the songs. They are all in one way or another a celebration of outsiderdom and the courage of those who choose to live their lives outside the norms and rules of conventional society.

Formed around the vocal and song writing talents of Mario Moe Schelbert and including pedal steel guitar, tsymbaly and banjo, Moes Anthill are soaked in the spirit of The Band, Wilco, bluegrass and other traditional American music styles. Mario also loves a good story. Thus, “Finding Stones” recounts the strange tale of the woman hit by a meteorite in Alabama whose home town was swamped by pilgrims as a result. “No Name Brass Band” tells the amusing anecdote of a brass band’s Christmas song rehearsal turning into a massive fight in the local pub, whilst “Worthwhile Waiting” describes the wild goings on during carnival time in central Switzerland, the band’s home area.

Produced by Hank Shizzoe, himself first-rate singer/songwriter with a profound understanding of all things Americana, “Quitter” was recorded the old-fashioned way, with the whole band present and playing together in the studio, and all manner of vintage equipment. The album is released physically on 1 February via TOURBOmusic in the GSA countries and digitally worldwide via Hamburg-based Kontor New Media.
