Puts Marie’s End Time Party
…and the award for the album title of the month goes to Puts Marie for “Pigeons, Politicians & Pinups During the Endtime of Mankind”. It can be admired now via Yagwud Records.
An on/off affair for very nearly a quarter of a century, Puts Marie from Biel, from being a hyper-dynamic guitar-driven indie outfit, have matured into a band whose members know each other’s strengths and foibles with telepathic certainty – a fact demonstrated by their remarkable last album, “Musique improvisée”, which was indeed totally improvised. Along the way, they were the winners of the inaugural “IndieSuisse Album of the Year Award” with “Masoch 1 & 2” (2013). With “PP&PDtEoM”, their ninth full-length album, they return to the safer ground of composed song, without, however, abandoning an exhilarating sense of adventure which seems to become more acute the older and more mature they grow.
“Pigeons, Politicians & Pinups During the Endtime of Mankind” is an astonishing work. Recorded with fantastic clarity and a keen ear for sonic surprises, the sound is massive and comes at us on so many layers it feels near-orchestral. Miles away from fiddly Prog virtuosity, what matters to Puts Marie are texture, mood and story. The songs are all at least five minutes long, with the longest, the extraordinary “Hotel Asylum” with guest vocalist Rea Dubach (Omni Selassi, Rea), clocking in at eleven minutes.
