The Sirens Of Lesbos Are About to Make Millions!
Fronted by the two sisters, Jasmina and Nabyla Serag, The Sirens Of Lesbos have treated us to a steady selection of gloriously unconventional and innovative grooves over the ten years of their existence. Their latest album (out now on their own Sirens Of Lesbos label) marks another step deeper into uncharted territory.
Starting with the cheeky title, “I got a song, it’s gonna make us millions”, they – together with their long-term studio team, producers Melvyn Buss and Arci Friede – have arrived at a style of music that manages to embrace all sorts of influences and still remain utterly, authentically theirs alone. Take the utterly bizarre – and, hopefully, prescient – title track: a telephone call to some captain of the music industry, presumably, announcing the arrival of said song that will make millions, followed by a wobbly, auto-tune-subverted vocal line about spreading some “love around the world”; 53 seconds and that’s it – very funny indeed! Elsewhere, we get all sorts of adventurous blends of styles, mostly involving wall-rattling bass laced with elements of R&B, gospel, electronic dub, hints of North and West Africa, and the odd guest, including 36birds, Zacari and Sad Boi. All perfectly brought together in the truly fantastic “Sodom & Gomorrah”.
Having made quite an impression on previous visits to the UK, The Sirens Of Lesbos celebrate the release of the album with a tour that includes a date with The Great Escape Festival and gigs at London’s Omeara, and in Bristol, Leeds and Manchester, plus trips to Turkey, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and France.
