Fomies Feeling Ominous

Possessed by an admirable work ethic, Vevey-based fuzz-rockers Fomies, present their fifth album in the space of four years. Entitled “Ominous Prominence”, it was released on 25 November by Taxi Gauche, the Zurich-based label that has built up an excellent roster and reputation over recent years.

With the acquisition of a keyboard player, the quintet’s stylistic range has been considerably expanded from the grungy riffing of their early days. Already an intriguing part of their sound on last year’s “Sudden Lag”, synths and organs are now playing a more prominent role, partly by adding new textures, and partly by casually dropping in with a bout of quicksilver riffing. Despite these developments – witness the darkly atmospheric “The Seeker” – the band’s self-description on Bandstand hasn’t lost any of its accuracy: “Great followers of the D.I.Y., FOMIES is a garage-fuzz band mainly inspired by obscure records badly recorded in weird places.”
