Mischgewebe Grow a “Violet”

“Violet” is the debut album from electronica/vocals duo Mischgewebe. It is released on 7 May by Lauter, the label run by a Zurich-based artist collective.

Mischgewebe is multi-instrumentalist and singer Melanie Danuser and guitarist/electronic wizard Bill Bühler. Coming together in a major panic in 2018, the duo quickly developed their own idiosyncratic way of working as well a sound located somewhere between dream pop, pulsating acid house and darkly meditative ambient.

Early in 2018, Mel D had been commissioned to appear in a contemporary dance piece. Rehearsals were to start the next day when it was pointed out to her that she was not just expected to contribute vocals to the performance but also an electronica-based soundtrack. Completely unfamiliar with the use of drum machines and synths, she was plunged into a panic. As luck would have it, on the way home in the tram she ran into an art school friend, Bill B, who volunteered to help out on the spot. Their emergency pairing turned out to be a musical match made in heaven. Bill’s atmospheric house beats and ambient soundscapes, together with Melanie’s dramatic vocals, went down a storm not just in theatres but also at dances. In the course of the next year or so, the duo played more than 80 live shows, recording each and every one of those – as well as their rehearsal sessions. From these recordings they distilled the best passages to form the more conventionally structured pieces that now make up a powerfully dreamy debut album.
