Jazzahead! Festival, Bremen

This year’s Bremen Jazzahead!Festival takes place from 25 April – 28 April. Launched in 2006, Jazzahead! Bremen is billed by the organisers – as an “exhibition and meeting point for the international jazz scene”. Last year, the 7000 visitors included over nearly 2300 music business professionals. Amongst the 500+ exhibitors were record labels, agencies, promoters, venues, publishers, export offices and media from 31 countries. The musical part of the event consisted of seventy concerts and showcases.

Swiss artists appearing at Jazzahead! Bremen are the Elina Duni Quartet (her debut album “Matane Malit”, released 2012 on ECM Records, is an exploration of Albania, the country she left with her family as a ten year old) and violinist Tobias Preisig whose album “In Transit” was released last year. SME will be present at the festival with a stall.

OY’s “Kokokyinaka” receives worldwide release

Joy Frempong – aka OY – proved with a tremendous performance at the recent M4Music festival in Zurich that she has greatly progressed in translating her unique musical vision on to stage. To tie in with a lengthy tour of Switzerland, Germany and Northern Europe, the second OY album, having been available in Switzerland for a few months already, receives an international release on 11 April. Using an intriguing array of keyboards, props and multi-tracked voices, and accompanied by drummer Lleluja-Ha, Frempong creates a gripping and utterly original fusion of Ghanaian and European influences, representing the two halves of her own heritage. Her part-electronic, part-organic music is unclassifiable, theatrical, funny, innovative and, above all, hugely enjoyable.

Death By Chocolate at MUSEXPO

Death By Chocolate, the Biel-based quintet around frontman Matthias Schenk has been invited to play at this year’s edition of MUSEXPO in Los Angeles. A few days later, they will also appear live at the legendary Viper Room venue. From its inception in 2005, MUSEXPO has established a reputation as one of the most important international conference/festivals in the industry calendar. For artists as diverse as Jessie J., The Temper Trap, FrankMuzik, Katy Perry and LMFAO, MUSEXPO has proved to be a vital stepping stone to success. This year’s event takes place from Sunday, 5 May until Thursday, 9 May. With over 140 gigs behind them, including a support slot in front of 40’000 Bon Jovi fans, it is unlikely the quintet with a sound somewhere between Oasis and Killers, but with added spice in the shape of Hammond organ and synth, will freeze on their momentous date with the great and good of the American music industry.
After a debut EP “My Portable Love”, the debut album proper “From Birthdays to Funerals” (Deepdive Records), was released in January 2012. Since then, the band has toured incessantly. Recently, their interactive video clip for the single “Tell Me What You See” was awarded the Berlin Independent Prize.
