East Sister weaving a spell
Carrying the oddly disorientating title “Road My Bird, Waving Back” comes the second album from Lucerne-based trio East Sister. It is out now via Red Brick Records.
After their debut EP fully ten years ago, Lorraine Dinkel, Laura Schenk and Amadeus Fries drifted apart, only to return six years later with their first album proper. Another four years, and here we are, at last, with the follow up. Their basic guitar and/or piano, bass and super-laidback drums set-up sprinkled with the odd discreet external sound remains the same. And so does the essence of their art: intricately crafted and arranged songs carried by the subtle close harmonies from the two vocalists, Dinkel and Schenk. Recorded mostly live in the studio and underpinned by a steadily driving groove, the songs ooze a dreamy sort of warmth. The eerily and ominously drifting “Aeroplane” is a riveting highlight.
