Ikan Hyu celebrating withdrawal symptoms
Ten years after getting together, multi-instrumental duo Ikan Hyu have released the follow up to their successful debut album “Oasis” (2023). Entitled “Withdrawal Symptoms”, the thirteen songs all revolve around a central theme of friend- and kinship. It is out now on Mouthwatering Records.
“You better get used to the sound of my guitar!” demand Ikan Hyu in a song entitled “amplifire” (sic) Oh yes, they’ve cranked it up to eleven! Recorded in Vienna with producer Syrix, “Withdrawal Symptons” first grabs the listener with its massive band sound – all instruments played by the duo themselves, Anisa Djodoatmodjo and Hannah Bissegger. However, with repeated listening, more and more delightfully bonkers textural details and experimental sounds reveal themselves. Amongst the unusual instruments applied are Moog Subsequent, theremin, walkie-talkie-turned-microphone, plus samples of birds and the ocean. Animals – especially fish – also feature prominently in the visual material accompanying the album and related singles and videos; they were all created by Hannah. By the way, Ikan Hyu means “shark” in Indonesian.
