BombayMami bringing peace

Already causing quite a stir in India, BombayMami’s debut album “Peaceful Attitude” is out now on MNRK Records. “A searing hotpot of soulful grooves, introspective lyrics, catchy beats, classical instrumentation and Bollywood throwbacks”, Indian Rolling Stone informs us in a major story in their latest edition, Peaceful Attitude plays out like a slow-burning meditation on finding strength and vulnerability.”

“Peaceful Attitude” – to go with a tattoo on the artist’s wrist – has been a long time coming. In fact, the origins date back to BombayMami’s previous incarnation as Ta’Shan (aka Shanta Vekantesh). The daughter of a Swiss mother and an Indian father, she grew up in Berne, spent time in Los Angeles and studied music at the BIMM school in London. Making waves even back then, especially with her single “Foodie”, she performed at the Glastonbury and the Great Escape festivals before personal complications caused a fundamental re-think. This led to a change of name and the study of Hindustani classical music as well as learning to play the tabla. “Ta’shan was a chapter of exploration, where I was figuring out who I was as an artist”, she explained at the time. “BombayMami, on the other hand, brings my entire identity to the forefront, honouring both my Indian and Swiss roots, my femininity, and the evolution I’ve gone through as a person and an artist.” Feminist and LBGTQ themes, meanwhile, form another important strand in her lyrics.

The songs of “Peaceful Attitude” began life as R&B/hip-hop tracks but acquired an entirely different hue when BombayMami teamed up with a group of Indian musicians and singers to create the sound she craved. With the video clip that accompanied the single “Fire in Delhi” going viral (BombayMami snowboarding, wearing a spectacular red lehenga), BombayMami’s career is gathering some serious momentum.
