A Pass and Kaboo creating miracles
Out now via Home Crowd Recordings comes the hotly anticipated first album from Ugandan singer, A Pass, and Swiss producer Kaboo. A Pass, aka Alexander Bagonza, is one of the most popular Ugandan singers of recent years. Working with a number of reggae producers in the early 2010s, he subsequently broadened his musical horizons to include elements of afrobeat, dancehall, hip-hop as well as traditional local styles. Kaboo (aka Jakob Liechti, also a collaborator of Mario Batkovic, Jeans for Jesus, Greis and many others) was already an integral part of Berne’s multifaceted music scene when he travelled to Uganda a few years ago to find fresh inspiration. The trip turned out to be such an enriching and joyful experience that today he splits his time between Berne and Kampala. An impressive and continually lengthening list of collaborations with Ugandan artists including Baru, Joshua Baraka and Beenie Gunter demonstrates the respect he now enjoys in that country. Renowned for crafting his own samples from scratch – you can find a highly entertaining short video of him “sampling” a Kampala taxi on YouTube-, Kaboo constantly experiments with fresh blends of hip-hop and local African styles and rhythms, clearly with great resonance in his chosen home from home. Well worth launching an internet trawl to discover Kaboo’s work!
