Zatokrev Exploring the Depth of Mirrors
Basel-based post-metal quartet Zatokrev return sludgier and darker than ever with a new (double) album, their sixth, “…Bring Mirrors to the Surface”. Released by Berlin-based Pelagic Records, it follows on from their split album with American doom-metallers Minsk. The album boasts several prominent guest vocalists, including Zeal & Ardor’s Manuel Gagneux, Bølzer’s Okoi Jones and several members of Minsk.
Emerging fully formed and astonishingly dynamic in 2004, a collection of what was supposed to be no more than demos to whet the appetite of certain metal labels, was released by the pioneering Nottingham label Earache. Since then, the band have gone from strength to strength. Encyclopaedia Metallum listed their album “…Silk Spiders Underwater” as one of the very best sludge albums of 2015, saying this about it: “What I loved most about this album and what made it one of my favourites in 2015 is the sound and overall feel. It sounds very clean. This allows the lead guitar and the atmosphere to stand out in a unique way. A clean sound is something I usually don’t like in sludge, I love to hear the dirt in the music. But in this album, it just felt right. And of course, as with every great album, it just came at the right time and has the “on the spot” feel.” Pretty much the same could be said about their latest work.
