WE ARE AVA Searching For Their Roots

Following on from their debut album “Inner Gardening” three years ago, electro-pop trio WE ARE AVA are staying with the horticultural theme for their follow up. Entitled “Radix”, it is available now on muve Recordings. Just in case our readers aren’t up with allotment vocabulary: “radix” – according to WE ARE AVA’s press release – is the botanists’ insider term for “the root system of a plant”.

Following the stir created by their debut album, WE ARE AVA collected several award nominations as well as an extensive touring schedule. With added experience comes greater confidence – as is evident from the melodic strength of the twelve tracks that form “Radix”. According to singer and songwriter Kim Lemmenmeier, the deeply personal lyrics focus on a search for mental stability and a “desire for rootedness”. If this sounds somewhat troubled, the music – composed by Lemmenmeier as a trio with multi-instrumentalist Nicola Holenstein and drummer Andy Schwendener – remains resolutely on the side of uplift and danceability.

In case anyone is wondering how they arrived at their name: during the very early days of musical bonding, the trio spent some days in a farmhouse in the hills of Eastern Switzerland. As is only right for these picturesque surroundings, they sat around the dinner table one night, all dipping their forks into a caquelon of melted cheese. And, lo and behold, the twin-pronged fondue forks happened to spell out the letters AVA.
