More Sarcastic Poetry from Mary Middlefield

Singer/songwriter Mary Middlefield is on a roll. “Poetry (for the corned and lonely)” is her second major release in less than a year. It is billed as an EP. However, with no fewer than eight new songs, it could rightly be called a mini-album. Out at the end of April, Young & Aspiring are responsible for the smooth running of the self-release.

Still only 22 years old, Lausanne-based Middlefield has had more than her fair share of troubled and even abusive relationships. Clearly a woman of strength and determination, she has succeeded in turning these painful experiences into a source of creative inspiration. Whilst her debut “Thank You Alexander” was a very public calling to account of a boyfriend who ditched her via text as she was carrying home their shopping. “Poetry (for the scorned and lonely)” deals with impressive candour and delicious sarcasm with a middle-aged teacher who managed to take advantage of a girl half his age, making her feel “like some disposable consumer item”. What makes Middlefield’s songs so alluring is her knack of setting unsettling lyrics to music that is full of warmth, thanks to acoustic guitars and strings. The odd electric guitar acts as a welcome counterpoint, leaving us with an album which, far from sounding bitter,  leaves the listener with a sense of hope and positivity.
