Hook Finds Inspiration in Kenya

Producer Hook’s first solo-EP celebrates his work with Nairobi’s thriving music scene. Entitled “Planting Seeds”, the record is released via Irascible Records.

Long associated with FlexFab, Murmures Barbares, Yeba and other French-Swiss hip-hop acts, Neuchatel-based Hook has over the years forged a particularly strong bond with the tireless, globetrotting experimenter, Muthoni Drummer Queen. His frequent working visits to her hometown, Nairobi, gave him first hand experience of the incredible richness of Nairobi’s contemporary musical culture. In early 2022, he decided to rent an apartment in Nairobi and set up his own temporary studio. Featuring established local vocalists as well as newcomers, including Karun, mau from nowhere, Xenia Manasseh and Vallerie Muthoni, “Planting Seeds” serves as a powerful and entertaining document from a creative residency that sounds like it was a truly inspirational experience for all concerned.
