SME @ The Great Escape, 10 – 13 May 2023

The Great Escape in Brighton – what’s not to like? A great seaside town, just a little ramshackle in just the right sort of way, choc-a-block with music for a whole four days! Plus, countless pubs and a wonderful beach to discuss events and exchange views, seafood restaurants galore, not to mention the famous Brighton rock to rot your teeth and send you into sugar rush overdrive. In short, it’s an event that none of us music people would want to miss and which for many musicians and professionals will set up the connections that determine the rest of their careers.

As ever, Swiss Music Export will be settling into the KOMEDIA Studio on Friday afternoon for our traditional Swiss music showcase, complete with the finest sandwiches money can buy, crunchy apples, chocolates and, of course, beverages of all sorts. Anyone with festival accreditation is cordially invited to drop in. Watch out, though – the room isn’t huge, and once a certain number of people are inside, security won’t let you in. In other words: arrive early and stay late! We can promise it will be worth it. This year’s bill with Anna Erhard, L’Éclair, Annie Taylor and Ikan Hyu might well be our strongest yet.

Swiss Performances at The Great Escape

ANNA ERHARD
THU 11 May | 17:00 | Jubilee Square
Once a member of chamber-folk-pop trio Serafyn, Anna Erhard combines a flair for easy-on-the-ear and yet unusual melodies with a tinder-dry sense of humour. Her latest album “Campsite”, released last autumn, laces her sardonic indie grooves with all sorts of electronic off-piste rides.

L’ÉCLAIR
THU 11/FRI 12 May | 00:15 | Latest Music Bar
Bongo Joe-recording artistes L’Éclair from Geneva were formed to blend into one the many musical loves and quirks of keyboarder Sebastien Bui and guitarist Stefan Lilov. Their all-instrumental sound draws from sources as disparate as 60s blaxploitation cool, Bert Kaempfert, Sun Ra or Liquid Liquid.

ANNIE TAYLOR
SAT 13 May | 14:00 | Volks
The hi-octane four-piece from Zurich fronted by Gini Jungi announced their arrival a couple of years ago with a hugely enjoyable – and successful! – debut album packed with shimmering guitars, powerful vocals and very morish melodies. Their follow-up, due out any minute, is just as powerful. This band rocks!

IKAN HYU
SAT 13 May | 22:30 | Prince Albert
Anisa Djodoatmodjo and Hannah Bissegger, ex-members of Bonaparte and Allen Finch, serve up a visually beguiling and musically often pleasingly dirty broth of electronica, rap and soul, laced with a hefty dose of rock.

These events are presented in partnership with Pro Helvetia, FONDATION SUISA, and the Embassy of Switzerland in the UK.
