Jaël Singing the Praises of “Midlife”

“Midlife” – note: not “midlife crisis!” – is not a subject often encounter in popular music, not to mention chosen as the title of an album. Singer/songwriter Jaël – sometimes Jaël Malli – has done exactly that. Her new solo studio album, her third, is available now via Phonag Records.

Jaël can be proud of her musical career. Singing in a variety of bands during her teenage years, she joined the successful Swiss trip-hop band Lunik shortly before the end of the previous century and stayed with them until their split in 2013. Since then, she has been involved in various co-productions as well as her own chart-busting solo albums, including two live recordings in an orchestral context and an album of songs for children. Prompted by the unfamiliar feelings she was faced with after the birth of her first child six years ago, and having matured into a singer/songwriter in the classic Mitchell/King/Nyro mode, the songs of “Midlife” are an appraisal of all that she has learned about herself and the people around her during the previous decades. “Midlife” is a collection of songs from a proudly middle-aged artist at peace with her place in life, and looking forward to find out what the future holds for her and hers.
