Swiss Music Export at m4music 2023

No spring without m4music! Yes, it’s that time of the year again, the time for the music tribes of Europe to gather at Zurich’s Schiffbau to partake in Swiss Music Export’s legendary «Business Mixer Brunch» on Saturday morning. Of course, there are lots of other events happening during those two days in March. Plenty of live performances, for instance, plus panel discussions, workshops and networking events. An ideal opportunity, in other words, to meet up with business professionals and artists from all over Europe in convivial circumstances, in an amazing venue. Whatever else might be happening around Schiffbau, however, we at SME can assure your that our fabulous business mixer brunch will be the one event you wouldn’t want to miss!

Get to know European Festivals

Friday, 24 March 2022 | 14:30 – 15:45 | Matchbox

This panel – a regular SME offer at m4music – allows for an in-depth insight into the workings of the big players on the European festival circuit. The continent is choc-a-bloc with festivals, many of which feature a showcase and a conference element. Here’s where you find out how programmes are put together and what kind of audiences are catered for. Is it useful for artists to attend a festival even when they are not performing themselves? Where are the differences between the various events? Clearly, this event is a must for anyone involved in booking bands or looking to get bookings for an artist, and artists looking for advice about how to hook that fabulous prime time slot at next year’s m4music.

Kem Lalot – Head of Booking (Les Eurockéennes de Belfort)
Bénédicte Froidure – Artistic Programmer and Programming Committee (MaMA Music & Convention)
Bjørn Pfarr – Head of Programme (Reeperbahn Festival)
Rémi Bruggman – Booking and Artistic Coordination (Montreux Jazz Festival)
Jean Zuber – Swiss Music Export  /  Moderator

SME Business Mixer Brunch

Saturday, 25 March 2023 | 11:00 – 13:00 | LaSalle
register before 21 March here

Meeting up with old friends again or forging new connections; discussing the experiences of the past year, planning for the next, or simply seeking advice – AND at the same time enjoying an endless supply of the best croissants and coffee in town: what’s not to like! Anyone who has ever attended one of these Mixers before will need no further invitation. They will know that it offers the perfect opportunity before the rush and the crush of the rest of the day to get a feel of the zeitgeist in Switzerland and the rest of the European music world. Those who haven’t been here before, well, it’s high time you mended your bad ways!

Attendance is open to all professionals. However, ACCREDITATON IS MANDATORY. As the space is restricted, so is the number of people we are able to entertain. Thus, unfortunately we have to have a “one band, one rep” rule in place. Also, we shall do our best to accommodate anyone on our list arriving before 11:30 – but if there is not enough space, there isn’t, alas, enough space to let you in. Anyone arriving after 11:30 will be able to join us on a first-come-first-served basis as long as there is room. Either way, and once again: ACCREDITATION IS MANDATORY.

Find the link to registration (before 21 March) here.

Swiss Success Story: Kings Elliot

Saturday, 25 March 2023 | 13:00 – 15:00 | Moods

Kings Elliot is on a roll. Barely returned from a triumphant arena tour of the US, supporting Imagine Dragons and Macklemore, the London-based singer/songwriter who grew up on the shores of lake Zurich, will be returning to the United States to support Stephen Sanchez on the completely sold out February leg of his US tour. This, after only a handful of EPs, the latest of which, “Bored of the Circus”, was released in September 2022 and contained the sumptuous piano-ballad “Butterfly Pen”.

What makes Kings Elliot’s success all the more remarkable is the fact that she has, and continues to, suffer from serious bouts of depression, combined with stage fright. Whilst it is comparatively easy for her to perform to a large and anonymous crowd in an American stadium, a show in a small and intimate setting is a deeply disorientating and frightening experience for her. As it turned out, her readiness and – above all – ability to describe her insecurities in song has earned her a large community of fans who often share her predicament. However, her songs are strong, beautiful and memorable enough to appeal to anyone, not just those who share her fate. Besides, the story of how Kings Elliot got to where she is today should serve as an inspiration to anyone hoping to find their path in a vastly overcrowded business. Hers is a story of guts, hard work, and belief. Oh, and talent, of course.
