Black Sea Dahu Turning into their Own Mother

“I Am My Mother” is the title of Black Sea Dahu’s long awaited second album. It was released on 25 February 2022 via Mouthwatering Records.

Thanks not least to their wonderful single “In Case I Fall For You” (11 million clicks on Spotify, half a million on youtube) but also their intensely atmospheric live performances, the Zurich-based quintet around the Cathrein siblings Janine, Vera and Simon, has become the hardest-touring outfit in Switzerland. Even with Covid-restriction, they have amassed nearly 300 gigs since the release of their first album “White Creatures” in 2018. Already, more than seventy dates in France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Netherlands and Austria have been pencilled in for the rest of this year.

“I Am My Mother” was recorded in an intense 23-day working session in a studio in Biel. The sound is markedly more orchestral and varied than on “White Creatures”, with all string instruments played by Janine, the principal songwriter and singer, and Simon. From the first track, “Glue” – the song takes their grandmother’s life with dementia as the starting point for some painful ruminations about the state of our world in general – it is clear that Janine’s ear for a mesmerising vocal melody has become still sharper. Similarly, the band’s ability to craft subtle arrangements has come along in leap and bounds. “In my world 1+1=2 doesn’t exist”, says Janine. “It’s not as simple as that. Things don’t add up, and I try to explain this with my music.”
