Eurosonic – 19 – 22 January 2022 – Groningen, NL

Eurosonic 2022 goes digital once again. Everything had been in place for a return to the real, analogue live version of our beloved ESNS in Groningen. SME had been hugely looking forward to the trip. Annie Taylor, Dino Brandão, Evelinn Trouble, Hermanos Gutiérrez, Kety FuscoMehmet Aslan and our shooting star of 2021, Priya Ragu, were all scheduled to accompany us and play their sets in front of an always-appreciative ESNS audience. Alas, it was not to be.

For reasons that are as obvious as they are too boring to reiterate here, Eurosonic is once again a digital-only experience. As we all know from last year’s version, ESNS Digital isn’t a bad thing at all – it’s just different. Frankly, given the circumstance we are very glad it is happening at all. All of us will be glued to our screens – and not just for the live music part of the festival but also the conference. In these uncertain times it is even more important to keep up with the trends, innovations and emergency measures in our business.

Whilst we are naturally very sad for our artists who cannot now take part in Eurosonic, we are pleased to announce that Annie Taylor, Evelinn Trouble, Mehmet Aslan and Priya Ragu have all survived the cruel cull of the programme.

Evelinn Trouble
Thu 20 January – 22:20 – 22:30
One of the most idiosyncratic as well as popular singer/songwriters in Switzerland, Trouble never stands still. For her fifth album, written in a cold winter in a near-empty Berlin, she claims to have gone “pop”. Needless to say, “Longing Fever” is as full of unexpected hooks and strange turns of melody as any of its predecessors.

Annie Taylor
Thu 20 January – 22:25 – 22:30
The raunchy four-piece fronted by Gini Jungi announced their arrival a couple of years ago with a high-octane debut album full of shimmering guitars, powerful vocals and very morish melodies. They have now written a few new songs and accumulated a huge amount of experience as a seriously in-demand live act.

Priya Ragu
Fri 21 January – 21:20 – 21:35 – Channel: ESNS 01
A very big shout-out for our post-Bhangra/R&B/everything queen: she has been specially selected by ESNS to perform a series of live sessions in Groningen. We think this is smashing news and a thoroughly well-deserved accolade for an artist who has gone from strength to strength in the past twelve months. See the video of her outstanding ESNS performance for ARTE Concert.

Mehmet Aslan
Fri 21 Jan – 23:30 – 23:40 – ESNS Channel: 03
Raised in Basel by Turkish parents, the DJ trawls a richly rewarding history of Turkish pop and underground music to produce his very own wildly eclectic brand of present-day dance psychedelia.
