Ester Poly Are Ready to Get “Wet”
And yet more fine records from Hummus Records! This one comes from Ester Poly, the duo consisting of super-busy bassist and singer Martina Berther from Zurich, and, from Geneva, drummer and singer Beatrice Graf. “Wet” was released on 20 August 2021. The album is Ester Poly’s second.
As the line-up of bass and drums would suggest, Ester Poly’s sound is rhythm-driven and urgent. Various pedals and triggers add melodic and textural depth. Sung in French and German as well as English, the lyrics tackle serious issues like racism, the pressures of a performance-focused society, and the lack of diversity in various corners of European culture. If this sounds overly earnest, it is not meant to. Like a lot of early 1980s new wave music, “Wet” combines message with humour (see “Dadada” or the quasi-military bark of “Hier Kommt Die Welt”) and irresistible dance grooves.
