Ursina – The Art of Letting Go Beautifully

30 April 2021 sees the release of “When I Let Go”, the second solo album from Grisons-born singer/songwriter Ursina via Radicalis Music. “Quietly I dive into the unknown/Been wanting to go there for so long” she sings, thus neatly summing up the subtle and confident mood of an album filled to the brim with gorgeous melodies, fine instrumental performances and a voice that glides with effortless ease across the octaves and emotions.

Born and raised in a village in the mountains of Grisons in the East of Switzerland, pianist and singer Ursina found her voice during a study year in Copenhagen. “I had always been fascinated by the North”, she says. “The North has mountains, like Switzerland, but also the sea and the Northern lights. Plus, I was listening to a lot of Scandinavian music, including Björk, José Gonzalez and Ane Brun.” More importantly, though, she drew a lot of strength from the self-confidence of the Scandinavian music scene. It was here that she started writing not just in her native language Romansh, but also in English. “It was important to me to sing in my mother tongue,” she says, “at the same time, as there aren’t very many people who speak it, I felt that it was also a bit of a constraint. Singing in both languages turned out to be the perfect solution for me.”

“When I Let Go” was produced by David Odlum whose long list of credits includes Irish band the Frames, Gemma Hayes, Sam Smith and Weird Beard, the Zurich-based experimental electronica/jazz outfit whose Florian Egli helped with arrangements and instrumental contributions on Ursina’s album.
