Hallucinating Hunger

4 September sees the release via Caroline International of Sophie Hunger’s new album, her seventh, entitled “Halluzinationen”. Produced, like “Molecules” in 2018, by Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey (Kae – formerly Kate – Tempest, Fontaines DC, Warmduscher, Black Midi, etc), it was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in six continuous live takes.

Shaped very much by Hunger’s environment in Berlin’s Kreuzberg area as well as the intensity of the recording process, the album ranges from the feather-light, bouncy and sarcastic electronica of “Everything is Good“ (inspired, apparently, by the artwork of David Shrigley) via the feverish “Alpha Venom” to the dreamy and yet deeply dark piano ballad “Rote Beeten aus Arsen”, sung in German. “Her closest comparison would be Feist, or Sharon Van Etten’s rhythmic revamp…”, writes UK mag Mojo and gives the album a strong 4 out of five.
