Swimming with Arthur Hnatek

SWIMS is the latest project from drummer extraordinaire, Arthur Hnatek. Described by Hnatek as “the exploration between acoustic improvisation and functional dance music”, the debut EP “SWIMS” was released on 19 June 2020 on Mouthwatering Records.

Arthur Hnatek is a busy man. The list of projects featuring his involvement is long. Best known for his work with the Warner/Parlophone-signed Erik Truffaz Quartet and pianist Tigram Hamasyan, who records for Nonesuch Records, he plays with a number of other bands, including his own Arthur Hnatek Trio with whom he won the prestigious ZKB Jazz Prize in 2019.

SWIMS sounds like none of Hnatek’s other outfits, however. Mixing percussive bleeps, drones and beats with washes of electronic sounds and the odd organic piano, the results successfully manage to tread the line between experimental risk and solid dance floor nourishment. One of the four tracks, “Pool”, features the voice of Andrina Bollinger who, apart from being a member of JPTR and Eclecta, has also appeared with Erik Truffaz.
