Swiss Music Export at m4music 14 – 16 March 2019 Lausanne & Zurich

Spring is coming – and so is m4music. Once again, our home conference/festival is a two-legged affair, linking the Swiss music scene with the rest of Europe in a three day extravaganza of music, discussion, workshops and networking events.

Starting off on Thursday 14 March in Lausanne, the list of events taking place at the headquarters of Radio Couleur3 in Lausanne, includes a panel discussion about the position of music journalism in the digital age, and shows by Black Sea Dahu, Petite Noir and Jessiquoi. The festival then moves on to Zurich’s fabulous Schiffbau venue for a two-day smorgasbord of events. By far the most important of these is – naturally – Swiss Music Export’s very own Business Mixer Brunch on Saturday morning.

Business Mixer Brunch
Sat 16 March 2019, 11:00 – 13:00, Moods (Schiffbau)

Contacts and connections are a treasured asset in the music world. The SME Business Mixer offers a perfect opportunity to exchange ideas and views with music professionals from all over Europe. What’s more, the best coffee in town, freshly baked bread and “Butterzopf” as well as a selection of cheeses, jams and fruit will create the sort of convivial atmosphere that makes talking to strangers easy. Newcomers especially should make the Business Mixer a priority in their programme. It is rare indeed to find so many like-minded people in the same room at the same time – and in a good mood.

All professionals are cordially invited to attend this event. Alas, there is only room for one representative per band! Accreditation is mandatory. To register, please follow this link no later than Tuesday 12 March: https://goo.gl/forms/AXZsXp4cKM0ElOJi2.

This event is presented by SME and Sonart.

We can heartily recommend all m4music panels and discussions – but especially the following.

European Hotspots
Sat 16 March 2019, 13:15 – 14:30, Moods (Schiffbau)

What makes it interesting for a band to play one of the big festivals? How do you get yourself booked? What makes a festival attractive for promoters, agents, media and other professionals? How important are they for the European music scene? Representatives from some of the key festivals in Europe will discuss the ins and outs of a business that is in a constant state of flux.

Participants for this panel are

Rebecca Ayres (Managing Director, Sound City, Liverpool UK)
Richard Gauvin (Head of Program, Rockomotives, Vendôme FR)
Elke Kuhlen (Festival Director, c/o pop Festival & Convention, Köln DE)
Robert Meijerink (Head of Program and Booker, Eurosonic Noorderslag, Groningen NL)

Tour de France!
Sat 16 March 2019, 14:45 – 16:15, Matchbox (Schiffbau)

France is the most important export market after Germany for the Swiss music business. From what point in a career is it worth touring there? Can a performance at the Paléo Fetival or the Montreux Jazz Festival realistically be regarded as a stepping stone towards the French market? A panel that includes our new colleague from our partner organisation Fondation CMA, Albane Schlechten, will discuss the importance of taking part in French showcase festivals as well as the most efficient ways of dealing with the paperwork in advance of a tour.

One-to-One Matchmaking
Sat 16 March 2019, 15:30 – 17:00, LaSalle Bar (Schiffbau)

Representatives from Swiss agencies and labels are matched up for a series of short sharp conversations with colleagues from abroad. Attendance is by invitation only.

The Demotape Clinic is a traditional and massively popular feature of m4music. Here’s where you discover the future! Artists are invited to enter a demo recording in several music categories. A pre-jury will select the best of these which will then be discussed by a panel of experts. The winners in each category – rock, pop, urban, electronica – will receive CHF 3000.-. An overall winner – “Demo of the Year” – will be awarded another CHF 5000.-.

Of course, we would hope that the m4music concert programme is choc-a-bloc full of shows you will not want to miss. However, may we point you in the direction of a number of acts that are particularly close to the heart of all of us here at Swiss Music Export, like Asbest, Black Sea Dahu, Cyril Cyril, Dagobert, Jessiquoi, Long Tall Jefferson, Lord Kesseli & the Drums, Steiner & Madlaina, Tatum Rush, Wolfman.
