Peter Kernel measure “The Size of the Night”

It is a real thrill for all of us at Swiss Music Export to be able to announce a new album from Peter Kernel. They are without a doubt one of the most innovative and intriguing bands Switzerland has produced in the past decade. “The Size of the Night” is their fifth album (not counting an extended EP, credited to Peter Kernel & Their Wicked Orchestra). It is released on the band’s own On The Camper record label on 9 March, with a release party to follow at the Point Ephémère venue in Paris on April 19.

Peter Kernel were formed in 2008 by Canadian/Swiss singer and guitarist Barbara Lehnhoff and guitarist Aris Bassetti. Lehnhoff is a filmmaker by trade, Bassetti a graphic designer. A strong visual element has always been a feature of the band’s output, both in their approach to building a song, and their ability to produce memorable and witty videos on a shoe-string budget. If the band had to be filed at all, musically, they could perhaps be squeezed in between the catchier side of Radiohead and Deus. Lehnhoffs’s sometimes laconic, sometimes volcanic vocal style, however, is completely of its own.

To celebrate the release of “The Size of the Night”, the duo – expanded to a trio for live performances with a drummer – is embarking on an extended and ever expanding tour of Europe, stopping off in Germany, Belgium, France, Netherlands and the UK.

The album is distributed in Switzerland (Irascible), UK (Code 7), Germany (Cargo), France (Orkhestra International), Italy (Goodfellas), Benelux (Sonic Rendez-Vous and Mandai), USA (Stickfigure), Canada (Fab) and Japan (Pdis).
