Switzerland at Les Transmusicales de Rennes – various venues – 30 Nov – 4 Dec 2016

Who would want to miss Les Transmusicales? Not us, that’s for sure, and hopefully neither will you! Once again, Swiss Music Export in collaboration with FCMA will endeavour to make a big musical splash at this fabulous multi-venue event in Rennes, the last and perhaps greatest opportunity of this year to discover next year’s break-through artists.

The traditional 2016 SME Focus Suisse showcase will take place on Friday, 2 December 2016 at L’Ubu. We will meet up at 15:30 for the Swiss Music Export networking aperitif, a great opportunity to exchange ideas, advice and telephone numbers in a laidback atmosphere. The showcase performances start at 16:30 at the same venue. Whilst entry to the showcase is open to all, accreditation is needed for the apéro.

16:30 Hyperculte

Hyperculte are the latest addition to a growing list of unlikely duo combinations offering up a stunning new palette of sound and vision. Formed in 2014 in Geneva, Hyperculte are Vincent Bertholet on upright bass and voice, and Simone Aubert on drums, guitar and voice. Their debut-album was released last spring, and they describe themselves a “minimalist transpop prekraut postdisco duo band“.

17:45 Pyrit

Pyrit is the name of Thomas Kuratli’s on-going adventure in cosmic desert music. Kuratli plays guitar and cymbals with an occasional dash of electronica. He released his debut album “UFO” earlier in the year.

19:00 Sandor

Sandor is a chansonneuse from Lausanne. Her style betrays traces of Yazoo and early Depeche Mode as well as the melodic approach of the likes of Etienne Daho.

Several other Swiss artists are scheduled to appear as part of the official Transmusicales programme.

Fai Baba, Friday, 2 December, 21:30, Parc Expo – Hall 3

Guitarist Fai Baba’s sonic spectrum ranges from swirling psychedelic guitar work-outs via rousing glam rock choruses to quiet soundscapes which are, if anything, more disturbing and emotionally charged. With a new album in his rucksack, Fai Baba is now partnered by the wonder percussionist Domi Chansorm.

Aïsha Devi, Saturday 3 December, 23:00, Parc Expo – Hall 9

Starting off from a more conventional electronica background under the name Kate Wax, Devi – a trained classical soprano with family roots in Nepal as well as Switzerland – has in recent years explored all kinds of vocal traditions beyond those of her twin origins, arriving at a mesmerising kind of psychedelic world electronica.

Mimetic, Saturday 3 December, 02:20, Parc Expo – Hall 9

Mimetic is producer and DJ Jérôme Soudan who has spent the last twenty years blending an idiosyncratic type of techno that incorporates influences from as far afield as black metal and Björk.

Garance, Saturday, 3 December, 03:00, Parc Expo – Hall 4 | Green Room

The Geneva-based post-Chicago house producer and DJ Garance recently release a new EP, “Democracy”.
