OY’s “No Problem Saloon” gains international release
Having signed on the dotted line with Crammed Discs, OY – the duo of keyboarder/multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Joy Frempong and percussionist Lleluja-Ha will be physically releasing their album “No Problem Saloon” in 23 European territories as well as Japan on 24th March 2014. The album will also receive global digital distribution through PIAS DIGITAL and A-Train in North America.
“No Problem Saloon” is essentially a renamed new version of OY’s Kokokyinaka album which created quite a stir when it was released in Switzerland last year. The duo further enhanced their reputation with a series of exciting multi-media gigs around Europe and the United States, including festival appearances at Transmusicales, Les Eurockéeenes, Sonar, and SXSW.
Berlin-based OY are Swiss-Ghanaian singer Joy Frempong and drummer/producer Lleluja-Ha. Theirs is a striking and unique style that mixes electronica, whirling drums, quirky and yet serious story-telling with mostly West African melodic and lyrical elements. Joy gathered some of the ingredients to this album during a series of trips to Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana and South Africa. She met scores of people, listened to proverb, heard stories, collected bits of field recordings which, upon her return to Berlin, were all used as building blocks for their music. Thus, the slamming of a taxi door became a drum beat, an antiquated washing machine provided an unusual bass sound.
The album will be preceded by the single “Market Place”, complete with a video shot in Accra, Ghana.
OY have also been confirmed to appear as part of the main program of the Great Escape festival in Brighton.
