Velvet Two Stripes: Saturday 7 December @ Parc Expo, Hall 3; 03.30-04.15h

The last major festival in Europe this year is also one of the most popular and most interesting. From its inception in those distant New Wave-days of 1979, the pioneering Rencontres Trans Musicales Festival in Rennes was conceived as a place to discover new bands, first and foremost. Long before festivals became the staple diet of the musical summer, Les Transmusicales rejected the easy method of festival programming. Instead of serving up a weekend of tried and tested crowd pleasers, the organisers were committed to musical originality and courage. From Minimal Compact, Blurt and Cabaret Voltaire in the early days, to Stereo MCs, MC Solaar and Björk in the 1990s, and, more recently, M.I.A. and Janelle Monae, the festival has demonstrated a fine radar for artists with the talent to bridge the gap between avant-garde and popular success.

We are pleased to report that SME-supported Velvet Two Stripes are part of the line-up for this year’s Trans Musicales (4-8 December 2013) program. Velvet Two Stripes from St. Gallen dress mostly in black. The trio’s music is a fierce, feral and Gothic fusion of electronically enhanced Rockabilly and T.Rex. The two sisters Sophie (vox) and Sara Digelman (guitar) and multi-instrumentalist Franca Mock are firmly rooted in the tradition of White Stripes and the Kills, but they have also added an element of sleazy metal and a hint of Siouxsie Sioux to create their very own blend of rock’n’roll.

Without a doubt, it has been a great year for Velvet Two Stripes. Apart from gigging incessantly and appearing at festivals like the Waves Festival in Vienna, M4Music in Zurich and the Great Escape Festival in Brighton, they also signed to the German label Snowhite Records.
