The Awkwards @ MUSIQUES EN STOCK, Cluses

Vevey-based four-piece The Awkards take their cue from the angular and raw post-punk experiments of late 1970s New York bands like Television, Talking Heads or Richard Hell, mixing in a few sharp disco beats and a beefy bass for good measure. They are anything but a retro crew, however. Any references to the past are merely a tool to communicate a thoroughly contemporary message. Formed in 2006, the band released their first EP, „Dancing Tea Club“, in 2009, followed by the album „Millenium Castle“ in 2011 and another EP in 2013. Unsigned, The Awkwards are a highly active driving force in the French Swiss independent scene.

The Musiques en Stock festival in Cluses, Upper Savoy, is already in its twelfth year, taking place from 3 to 6 July 2013. The fact that all events, indoors and outdoors are completely free and organised around the centre of town gives it a very special communal atmosphere. Amongst the twenty bands performing alongside the Awkwards in this year’s edition are Villagers, Patrick Watson and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

The Awkwards: Friday, 5 July 2013, 20.40h, Scène de la Plage.

OY @ Les Eurockéennes de Belfort, France

OY – aka Joy Frempong, ably supported by percussionist Lleluja-Ha – will be appearing live at Les Eurockéennes de Belfort on 6 July 2013, 17.30-18.10h, La Plage Stage.

Joy Frempong is a musical free spirit. Seeking to find an artistic expression for the cultures of both her parents – Ghanaian and Swiss – she has long since left behind the limitations of geographical borders and genre definitions. Having collaborated with artists as diverse as File-Wile, Sun of Moon, and even the Italian canzionere Lucio Dalla, she is currently performing with several bands, all of them fascinatingly different, including Lauschangriff, Lavez vs Stade and the truly riveting Phall Fatale with free improv percussion veteran Fredy Studer.
OY’s second album under her own steam, “Kokoyinaka” (Creaked Records) was released in spring 2013. Here, Frempong has succeeded brilliantly in marrying electronic with organic instruments whilst preserving the exuberance of her live shows. Live especially, she has truly come into her own in the past year. Ably supported by percussionist Lleluja-Ha and a series of imaginative videos, she has succeeded in turning her performances into a musically and visually gripping spectacle.

OY’s appearance at Les Eurockéennes marks the start of a series of concerts throughout the summer in France (including MaMA in Paris), Germany and Switzerland.
